An award will be presented for the first time during the V4 Symposium in Szeged. In view of the long history of vanadium in chemistry, the award will be named after Vanadis, Norse Goddess of Love and Beauty, the deity after whom vanadium was named.

The Vanadis Award is presented to a researcher in an area of Vanadium Science, at each International Vanadium Symposium prior to a lecture to be given by the recipient. It will be awarded on the basis of contributions to a discipline or combination of disciplines of vanadium science, to those having displayed innovative research and having had a documented impact on the direction of the field.
The recipient will receive a specially designed diploma which will be selected from the entries of a design competition.

The nominee will be selected on the basis of the following criteria

1. Innovative research. A history of development or expansion of techniques and procedures. Discovery of new chemical, biochemical, biological, technological or pharmaceutical systems.

2. Development of new applications in one or more of the following areas: chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmaceutical science, materials science and nanotechnology.

3. Wide-ranging influence of the nominee's work on the research of others in one or more disciplines.

4. A documented record of high quality and impact publications.

5. Service of the nominee to progress, application and exploration of vanadium in science.

Nominations will be submitted by the nominator and should include:
no more than a 1-page description of the contributions of the candidate
the candidate's resume
a supporting letter from a leader in the scientific community.

Nominations for the 2004 Vanadis Award must be received before April 30, 2004 and any received later than this will be discarded. The nominations should be sent to:
