This poster illustrates the use of stripping potentiometry (Potentiometric Stripping Analysis) for the analysis of trace elements in wound fluids at parts per billion levels.
The measuring technique which comprises an acid digestion step together with the electroanalytical quantitative determination will be discussed briefly along with the role of trace elements in the wound healing process.
Data collected from a set of analyses on acute surgical wounds will be presented in terms of metal deficiency or excess for a series of patients by correlation with pre-operational blood plasma levels.
Also, the chemical speciation of trace elements amongst a series of low molecular mass amino acid and inorganic ligands in wound fluids will be presented in terms of free metal ion, charged and neutral species, and metal bioavailability together with an assessment of the JESS computer speciation modelling system.
