Mozart Marathon – a full day of Mozart operas
Last year was Mozart Anniversary Year, thus acclaimed opera and stage director Balázs Kovalik (known for his innovative approach to theatre and especially opera) came up with the idea of presenting the three Da Ponte operas of Mozart (Figaro, Cosí and Don Giovanni) first separate than back-to-back in one day. Accomplishing this feat after just three months of rehearsal – as one serious opera critic wrote – would seem a fraud had it not been for Kovalik’s great passion for work, and for the young, enthusiastic and still emotionally and mentally flexible opera singers he worked with in a workshop-like manner. The performances were so successful, that the Budapest Spring Festival, commissioner of the productions, programmed them again this year – although they’ve never programmed any performance twice in their 26-year history. The three operas together create an encyclopedia of the basic problems of human relationships. During the ‘Marathon’ one is faced with the manifestation of the power of Art through the existential importance and staggering complexity the performances incorporate: an opera experience becoming a milestone for Hungarian opera production. Ironically enough, we might never see these performances again.
