Research profileIt bears a great impact to reveal the different behavior of enantiomers of pharmaceutical compounds, since one of the enantiomers may have a positive effect thanks to its biological activity, while the other enantiomer may be inactive, or it may have some unwanted or even toxic effect. As opposed to the past, nowadays enantiomerically pure compounds are preferred in the pharmaceutical industry. The separation of enantiomers having biological and/or pharmaceutical interest is an important task in modern analytical chemistry. The deeper understanding of the mechanistic details of chiral recognition is essential for designing of enantioselective separation methods and developing new stationary phases. Through the determination of the chromatographic parameters of the applied model compounds, we investigate the effects of the composition of the mobile phase and the nature and concentration of different additives on the separation. Investigation of the effect of the temperature on the chromatographic parameters and study the relationship between the physico-chemical parameters and the chromatographic characteristics is also an important issue. In our investigations focus is put on the high- and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-based methodologies. As a further aim the development of new analytical methods for the determination of highly important compounds related to life sciences (e.g. kynurenic acid and its analogs) from biological systems can be mentioned.
